Asaf Jah I possessed excellent administrative skills, which helped lay a strong foundation for the subsequent Nizams of Hyderabad. Originally named Qamar-ud-din Khan, Asaf Jah 1 had a strong background in administration and organizational frameworks.

EXPERIENCE IN ADMINISTRATION

He was a nobleman and statesman in the Mughal court, serving under emperors Aurangzeb, Bahadur Shah I, and others. Known for his strong administration, Asaf Jah I organized the military, reformed revenue collection, and ensured political stability.

The Hyderabad state and the Nizam dynasty greatly benefited from the administrative skills of Asaf Jah 1, the first Nizam of Hyderabad. A few examples are presented below.

ADMINISTRATIVE ACHIEVEMENTS

Asaf Jah I established a stable and autonomous government in the Deccan after the decline of the Mughal Empire. Systems were designed and put into place to ensure, long-term political stability.

He reorganized the revenue administration, streamlining tax collection and reducing corruption. This ensured steady income for the state. Asaf Jah 1 the first Nizam of Hyderabad, defined parameters to ensure that funds were effectively distributed for the military, infrastructure, and public welfare

He emphasized on assigning the right job to the right man and valued competence and loyalty. As the founder of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, Asaf Jah I appointed capable officials, many from diverse backgrounds – this strengthened governance and increased public trust in the administration of Hyderabad.

Realizing that the Nizam dynasty would always face challenges from the likes of the Marathas and other regional powers, Asaf Jah 1 made great efforts to maintain a strong military and ensured sufficient funds for this to happen.

Without being ignorant of the challenges that could arise, from surrounding powers like the remnants of the Mughals, the French and the British, Asaf Jah 1 used his diplomatic acumen to maintain cordial relationships with all these players. This in a way allowed the state of Hyderabad, to function with due autonomy.

BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE

It is true that the administrative framework set up by the first Nizam Asaf Jah I, formed the blueprint for future Nizams, allowing the dynasty to flourish for over two centuries, until Hyderabad’s eventual integration into India in 1948. History reveals that, the Nizam rule did much for the betterment of Hyderabad and its people. It was not just about the Nizams growing wealthy and powerful.
